Palliative care education grants

Posted on October 8, 2024

Primary Health Tasmania is offering education grants to help primary healthcare professionals boost their knowledge and skills in palliative care.

Two short online courses will be available through Flinders University – a Certificate in Palliative Care (10 weeks), and a Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care (13 weeks). There will be no cost to successful applicants.

The education grants are part of Primary Health Tasmania’s Australian Government-funded work to support quality palliative and end-of-life care for Tasmanians, including those who want to receive care at home.

Primary Health Tasmania spokesperson Susan Powell says there is evidence in Tasmania and nationally that the demand for palliative care services is high and growing.

“We also know that a relatively small proportion of the people who want to die at home actually end up doing so,” she says.

“With our ageing population, these demands will only continue to grow, and we need to act now to improve care in the future.

“These grants are designed to help health professionals support Tasmanians who are living with a life-limiting condition, nearing the end of their life, dying, and grieving.”

The grants are open to a range of practitioners including medical professionals, nurses, allied health professionals, Aboriginal health workers and paramedics, with courses commencing in March 2025.

Priority consideration will be given to certain applicants, such as those working in rural areas.
