Child s*xual abuse in the Tasmanian context reflective practice workshop – north Tasmania

Primary Health Tasmania, in collaboration with Laurel House and the Safer Families Centre, invites general practice staff to attend a new education session: Child s*xual abuse in the Tasmanian context reflective practice workshop.

This workshop is designed for Tasmanian general practitioners and other primary care professionals and staff. The interactive workshop complements the existing Identifying and responding to child s*xual abuse in primary care e-learning module by moving beyond foundational recognition and response skills to explore how place, community, practice environments and local service systems shape what is noticed, disclosed and possible in care. It also compliments the Pathways to Safety Family and Sexual Violence workshops that are currently being rolled out across Tasmania.

The Child S*xual Abuse in the Tasmanian Context reflective practice workshop is suitable for participants, whether they have completed the online training module or not.

• Key themes include the Tasmanian child s*xual abuse context, relevant learnings from the Tasmanian Commission of Inquiry, rural and regional access, confidentiality and familiarity in smaller communities, barriers experienced by different patient groups, and the roles and interfaces of local services.

• Through guided reflection, participants will examine the characteristics of their own patient population, practice and community, including local strengths, assumptions, service gaps and factors that may influence recognition, disclosure, referral and continuity of care.

Deidentified case study discussions and local system mapping will support participants to consider how care can be coordinated across services, where patients may become lost between parts of the system, and practical opportunities to strengthen follow-up, referral pathways and shared responsibility within their own practice.

This workshop is approved for 1 hour Educational Activities and 2 hours Reviewing Performance with RACGP. ACRRM approval currently pending.

Learning outcomes: 

• Analyse how Tasmania-specific geographic, community, cultural and service-system factors can shape recognition of disclosure of and access to support for child s*xual abuse.
• Reflect on how the characteristics of their own patient population, practice environment and local community may facilitate or hinder safe recognition and response.
• Explain relevant Tasmanian consultation, reporting and referral pathways, and describe the roles and interfaces of key services involved in preventing and responding to child s*xual abuse.
• Apply patient-centred coordinated-care principles to Tasmanian cases, including consent, communication, role clarity, referral, follow-up and contingency planning.
• Assess current practice processes and resources for responding to child sexual abuse and identify practical improvements that strengthen continuity and reduce fragmentation of care.

Speaker information: 

Kaity Graham is a sociologist with more than a decade of experience across health and social services, with a focus on primary prevention, early intervention and coordinated service responses. As Community Education & Advocacy Manager at Laurel House, she leads prevention, education and advocacy work, including initiatives that strengthen general practice responses to family and sexual violence.

Kerri Collins is a social worker with 20+ years’ experience working across the sector in both Government and Non-government roles in the fields of Family violence, Youth Justice, Child safety and Education.  Her current position as the Therapeutic Services Manager at Laurel House has oversight of three offices across North and Northwest Tasmania (Burnie, Devonport and Launceston) as well as the Arch multidisciplinary Centres collocated with Tasmania Police, Child safety services and Family violence counselling and support services located in Burnie and Launceston.
