The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) is the largest, statewide Aboriginal community-controlled organisation in lutruwita (Tasmania) The TAC has continuously represented the political and community development aspirations of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people since the early 1970s. They provide a wide range of community services from health, social justice, community support, economic development, and land management. The TAC is a Registered Training Organisation supporting Aboriginal education, employment, and training needs along with facilitating a number of cultural education programs, under the Cultural Competency Training unit.

The Cultural Competency Training program provides comprehensive knowledge of Tasmanian Aboriginal history, continuing culture, and the ongoing impact of colonisation. It encourages understanding of Aboriginal rights and provides the context for the delivery of culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal people.
tipara waranta kani nina-tu is for anyone who employs, works alongside, or engages with Aboriginal people and community. It is also for individuals and businesses whose products and services are directed towards or feature Tasmanian Aboriginal people, history, or culture.

This event is approved for 2.5 hours of Educational Activites and 2.5 hours of Reviewing Performance with RACGP.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify historic events that have impacted and shaped the contemporary Aboriginal community.
  • Describe verbal and non-verbal communication approaches that promote cultural respect in the general practice setting.
  • Identify common barriers to cultural safety in the general practice setting.
  • Differentiate between cultural awareness and cultural safety.
