Primary Health Tasmania and the Tasmania Sexual Health Service are presenting an update on current best practice in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A previous webinar session in 2021 covered sexual health testing, chlamydia/gonorrhoea, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PREP) for HIV, syphilis, and transgender medicine. After receiving feedback from the previous webinar, the following topics in this ongoing webinar series will include an introduction to sexual health testing, an update on syphilis following a recent increase in Tasmanian cases, genital warts, genital herpes simplex, revisiting PREP and its prescription outside of sexual health in Tasmania. Public Health Tasmania will also be present at this webinar to share some statistics on the rising STIs in Tasmania.
This is a CPD-approved activity, which will include 1.5 hours of Educational Activities.
The learning objectives covered in this event are:
• Describe what a sexual health screen entails.
• Describe current epidemiology of STIs in Tasmania.
• Identify current best practice in diagnosis, management and follow-up of Syphilis, Genital Warts, Genital Herpes.
• Identify current best practice in managing a patient on long-term PREP.

Dr Alvin Ding is a Consultant in the Tasmanian Sexual Health Service – having moved from the United Kingdom in 2016 with his family. He has been working in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine for more than a decade.
Professor Louise Owen is the director of Statewide Sexual Health Services Tasmania and a lecturer at the School of Medicine, University of Tasmania. In addition to clinical practice Louise has an interest in public health, HIV diagnosis outside of sexual health and clinician education.
Dr Kate Scoles graduated from the University of Tasmania and completed her medical training within the Tasmanian Health System. She qualified in General Practice, where she practiced for several years before undertaking Sexual Health Physician training, recently qualifying in 2020. Kate has lived in Tasmania most of her life and is passionate about providing quality health care to her fellow Tasmanians.
Dr Jennifer Misson is a UTAS graduate who has gone on to complete her General Practitioner and Sexual Health Physician fellowships. Jenny has experience in sexual and reproductive health care in Tasmania and interstate, and is particularly interested in marginalised and disadvantaged populations. Outside of work she is a passionate reader, grower, and creator.
Dr Romy Nicholson has worked as a General Practitioner across a range of settings in Australia, including most recently 10 years in Hobart. She is currently working in Public Health Services within the Communicable Diseases Prevention Unit, which includes working on the public health response to increasing notifications of syphilis in Tasmania
Dr Helen Bills is an Advanced Trainee in the Tasmanian Statewide Sexual Health Service. She is a UTAS graduate who completed her General Practice qualification in the Mid North Coast of NSW, before working as a General Practitioner across a range of settings, including Aboriginal Controlled Health Organisations and in custodial care. She is passionate about health equity and holds emancipative values.
