The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) Aged Care Reform Unit, in partnership with key sector stakeholders, invites health, aged care and community service clinicians to attend a rights-based care workshop being delivered across Tasmania in October.

With Tasmania’s ageing population and the Aged Care Act 2024 placing greater emphasis on the rights of older people, this workshop will support participants to translate the principles of dignity, autonomy, participation, and freedom from discrimination into everyday practice across a range of care settings.

This interactive workshop will explore practical strategies for recognising and addressing ageism and unconscious bias, balancing dignity of risk with duty of care, identifying and responding to elder abuse, and supporting informed decision-making through rights-respecting communication, documentation, and care planning. Participants will also hear directly from consumer advocates, who will share their lived experiences and insights into what rights-based, person-centred care looks and feels like in practice.

Presenters include representatives from the Human Rights Commission, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Aged Care Research & Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA), Tasmanian Council on the Ageing (COTA), Primary Health Tasmania and the THS.
