This dinner forum aims to bring high quality up-to-date education and resources to GPs and primary healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge, skills, and confidence in working with people with intellectual disability. The session will include perspectives from a person with lived experience and a keynote presentation from Professor Julian Trollor.
The learning objectives covered in this event are:
- identify the types of mental, physical, and oral health conditions which are common in people with intellectual disability
- describe key elements of successful communication with people with intellectual disability
- identify whole-of-practice reasonable adjustments to improve access to health care for people with intellectual disability
- increase understanding of restrictive practices, to promote best possible health care of clients with intellectual disability.
Introducing our speakers:
Professor Julian Trollor
Julian is a neuropsychiatrist and holds the inaugural Chair of Intellectual Disability Mental Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He also heads the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) within the School of Psychiatry at UNSW. Julian and his 3DN team work to improve health policy, practice and supports for people with an intellectual or developmental disability. The team is involved in teaching, training, health promotion, and the development of educational resources. 3DN conducts research with high translational benefit to the disability and health sectors and provides consultancy of the highest standard, including clinical consultations, advocacy and contributions to policy and legislative reviews.
Judy Huett
Judy Huett is a person with lived experience. She has attained qualifications in Disability Support, Aged Care, Information Technology and Small Business Management; and completed leadership development training through Leaders for Tomorrow (2012) and Voice at the Table (2016).
Currently Judy works part-time with Speak Out Association of Tasmania in Self Advocacy Liaison and Support, and sits on the Roadmap Implementation Governance Group that oversees the national approach to improving the health of people with intellectual disability. Judy has promoted rights and health at diverse conferences and events.
An accomplished leader, Judy is best known for her extensive contributions via her voluntary work that includes travelling to Geneva, Switzerland in 2013 with the expert group to talk to and present to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) and again in 2019 to Geneva as a co-lead of the Australian delegation – the first Person with an Intellectual Disability to be co-lead of a delegation to report on the UN CRPD; member since inception of the national Intellectual Disability Reference Group (IDRG) and past member of the Independent Advisory Council (IAC) that advises the Board of the National Disability Insurance Agency about the NDIS
Dr Keith McArthur
Keith works across several roles within the Tasmanian Health Service, including GP Liaison Officer NW. Keith grew up and trained in Sydney, and completed his medical degree at Sydney University. He Moved to Tasmania and became a resident doctor at the old North West Regional Hospital in 1987. He commenced general practice in Wynyard from 1987 – 2002. Keith has worked as a psychiatric CMO/registrar at Community Mental Health Parkside, Spencer Clinic NWRH and Rivendell Clinic NWPH. His experience also includes consultant GP Umina Park RACF.
Rob Rickard
Rob is an Occupational Therapist by profession. He works for the Tasmanian Office of the Senior Practitioner, as Acting Senior Practitioner. This role looks at facilitating the approval of restrictive practices.
Dr Ioan Jones
Dr Ioan Jones has been working as a public health dentist for over 26 years. Ioan has been working for Oral Health Services Tasmania since 2010 coordinating education and training and more recently has taken on the role of Clinical Director. Ioan has always had an interest in dental education both previously in the UK and now in his new home of Australia and is passionate about increasing the knowledge of health professionals on how poor dental and oral health, has an impact on general health. As well as being a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the University of Tasmania Centre for Rural Health, Ioan is also an Associate Professor with James Cook University and Adjunct Associate Professor with La Trobe University.
