Primary Health Tasmania is supporting implementation of the Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) decision support tool across the state.

This free online tool aims to standardise the assessment of people seeking mental health support in primary healthcare settings. The IAR tool is currently being used by the Tasmanian Department of Health for the Head to Health Phone Service, and is a core function of the Central Intake and Referral Service (CIRS).

This session will use an adaptation of the tool designed for children, and will be joined by Dr Tim Jones, a senior medical educator with the RACGP, who has an interest in child and infant health. He is passionate about supporting parents and families in a holistic manner.

The IAR training will run for two hours and focus on:

  • introduction to IAR tool and the development of the national guidance
  • orientation to the domains, levels of care, and decision support tool
  • clinical judgement and supported decision making
  • application of the IAR tool in assessment and intake settings (practical activity using a case vignette)
  • discussion around local and national mental health services, including the newly released HealthPathways pages and eReferral options.
